The Why Of It All
By: Thomas A. Karcher

When the State of Ohio passed the current smoking law, Dellagnese properties set a policy that smokers should smoke only in their cars if they smoke on the property.

Many of us at Dellagnese did not vote for the smoking ban in buildings even though the majority of our employees, or possibly all, do not smoke.

Once the law was passed we evaluated how we had dealt with smoking in the past and what our future policy should be.  Stories have been relayed by our employees that tenant employees have literally thrown cigarette butts on the ground as they were cleaning up old discarded butts.

We were aware that groups of smokers congregated just outside building entries when their employers banned smoking inside.  These areas were always covered with cigarette butts.

We all know that rules of behavior are often set in society to solve a problem that people of reason should have taken care of themselves.  The aformentioned rule became necessary because we could not count on smokers to police themselves.

We at Dellagnese do not want to be the smoke police, nor do we want to be firemen.

This article was inspired by the Fairlawn Fire Department who extinguished a fire today in a landscaped area of our 3560 West Market Street building which was started by a discarded cigarette.

Smoke em if you got em, in your car next to the ashtray.

Please post this article on office bulletin boards.  Thank you.
